India imports more than half of the edible oil it consumes

When approving the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds in October 2024, the Union Cabinet stated that imports account for 57 per cent of India's domestic demand for edible oils. The Mission aims to raise primary oilseed production from 39 million tonnes (2022-23) to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030-31 and, with the oil palm mission, to meet about 72 per cent of projected domestic requirement from domestic production by then.
