Learning lost during the school closures of 2020–21 has not been demonstrably recovered

UNESCO recorded India as having one of the longest COVID-19 school closures in the world, affecting an estimated 250 million school-enrolled children. Independent field research documented regression — children losing language and mathematics abilities they had previously held — rather than merely slower progress. Whether that loss has since been closed is an open question: ASER 2024 shows recovery nationally while more than half of states remain below their 2018 reading levels. Evidence confidence: Medium-High for closure duration and the fact of regression; the widely quoted magnitude figures come from secondary reporting of a single field study and are not entered here.
